Part of Reading Abbey ruins viewed from the Oscar Wilde Walk. The brick building to the right, is part of Reading Gaol, where Wilde was incarcerated. [link]
This may serve as a good background for the photomanip folks. If used please link and credit. Thanks.
Thanks for the link Den. That is one old abbey! No wonder there isn't much left of it. Still quite impressive though.
Ahhh I see what you mean about Oscar Wilde. Wasn't society so tolerant in them days?! You have to admit, things have certainly changed in the last 50 years.
I think there is more history of it if you search more deeply. That was one of the easiest results to search through. Certainly is a lovely old place. Just a pity the abbey part is now closed off for safety. Was in there no more than 2 - 2 1/2 years ago.
Homosexuality wasn't legalised/decriminalised until the 1970s I believe.
I have now inserted a link to a history of the abbey. I hope it is enough to satisfy the curious.
Oscar Wilde was imprisoned for being homosexual, i.e committing homosexual acts. (It seems us bent old farts were even more frowned upon then, than now.)
